Auschwitz Birkenau has become a symbol of the Holocaust. In 1940 the Nazis established a concentration camp which soon became the scene of horror for people of various nations. Throughout its existence nearly 1,5 million of victims, mostly Jews, lost their lives in gas chambers, crematoriums or as a result of starvation, epidemics and inhuman conditions. When in January 1945 Soviet army were approaching Auschwitz, Nazis decided to obliterate the traces of their crimes. However, they did not have enough time to destroy all the buildings and much of the camp remained intact. Sightseeing of Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II Birkenau lasts 3,5 hours. You will see the barracks, gas chambers, crematories and the main gate with the infamous phrase “Arbeit macht frei” written above the entrance. The tour includes a short documentary movie about the liberation of the camp.
